NUWAKOT Training Experiences, Attacks and Victory - May 2014

It's been a long time since I updated this page :(
This time I would like to share some of the experiences we as a team went through in doing training in a district called "NUWAKOT" one of the 75 districts of Nepal.

The one thing you have to know about this district is that NUWAKOT has the highest rate of human trafficking problem among all of the 75 districts of Nepal. It is so sad that in some of the villages in this district you don’t even find girls between the ages of 12 to 20 because they’ve all been sold.

We faced lot of challenges and opposition in doing training in this district that we have never faced in other trainings before and I would like to share them with you:

#1) When I started planning to do training in this district, while fixing dates the host would always confirm the proposed dates first but after few weeks they would change it. And deep in my heart I knew that something was going on that the enemy didn’t want us to do these trainings in Nuwakot. We kept praying together with the host to make it happen. The dates changed 4 times since February 2014 until God helped us to do it last week, May 18-20.

#2) The second challenge, which I believe was an attack too, occurred when the four of us were traveling together to Nuwakot for the training. We reached the bus park quite earlier than our departure time so we left our bags on the side of the road near the bus counter and restaurant where we ate our breakfast. When our bus came we all got onto the bus thinking that we picked up all our bags. After 2 hours a voice in my heart prompted me to ask Bishal (our training staff traveling with me) if we had picked up the projector bag. That was the second time I was prompted to ask but the first time I ignored it thinking Bishal surely had picked up the bag. But when I asked him, he said, I thought you (Jomesh) picked it up. Then we stopped the bus, and checked everywhere but sadly we couldn’t find the projector bag. The bus passengers were quite tense because they thought that the bag had been stolen. This was a new projector and we knew that none of us had picked up the bag, which means we left it at the bus park. Our hearts sank.

With very little hope I asked the driver to call the guys at the bus counter in Kathmandu to go and check the area where we had left the bag. His reply to me was there is no way that you will find that bag again. Some of you who have been to Nepal know what that means L. But I asked him if he could at least just try and call for me. Some of us in the meantime were praying and pleading with God that it would be found. The driver honored my request and called the guys at the counter. The guy at the counter went to check the area and guess what, the bag was still there J Praise God! Think about this, the bag was left for 2 hours curbside in an area that is so busy with lots of people moving about and amazingly the bag was still there! I believe that it was God who hid the projector bag from the people. So Bishal jumped off the bus, returned to Kathmandu to retrieve the bag and was still able to reach the training location on the same day.

#3) On the second day of training, one old man came to the training site and scolded us for doing the training. Now this old man was an extremist Buddhist actually a “LAMA” (the one who leads Buddhist rituals) and was very concerned that his whole village would become Christian if we trained these young leaders. So he was using all kinds of dirty words and asking us to stop the training. Needless to say I was little upset. But after some time the Church leaders managed to send him back. This village where we were holding our training was a highly Buddhist dominated village and they really hate Christians. Let’s pray that the Church would continue to show Christ’s love to these people and that they would one day know the truth.

#4) On the very same day, in the afternoon we experienced another attack. This one may be hard for some of you to believe and understand. Demon attacks are not as common in the West as they are here in Nepal. One of the youth leaders attending the training, who was perfectly fine on the first day of training, began crying and wailing out loud at the beginning of the afternoon session. She was saying that her heart was burning and continued screaming. Everyone was shocked and started praying for her but she continued crying out loud for about 30 min. We decided to take her to another room and we prayed for another 2.5 hours. While we were praying she would sometimes stop breathing. We were actually quite afraid for her. Eventually she spoke which we believe was actually the demon that was attacking her. It said that her father was angry with her for becoming a Christian. Her father is a witch doctor and he had been persecuting her ever since her decision to follow Jesus and he was sending a demon spirit to attack her. Finally after so much prayer the demon left her and she was totally fine for the rest of the training.

#5)  One of the things I love about Nuwakot is that this district has 24 hours of electric power because it produces more hydropower that others. As a result, the people living there demand to be provided power all the time whereas the capital city of Kathmandu suffers 12 hours of power cuts everyday.

Surprisingly on the 3rd day, right after the youth ministry training, a short but large storm came through the village and the power went out. My friend Cynthia V., who was leading the anti-human trafficking workshop the next day, was worried because she was prepared to show some video clips of testimonies to demonstrate to the people how demonic trafficking is and what the role of the Church is in the fight to stop this injustice.

We prayed for the power to return but we didn’t have power the entire night. The next day we kept praying but still there was no power. Cynthia managed to run the workshop without power but that meant that she was unable to show those video clips and the testimonies that were so powerful.

The exact moment the workshop was over and the participants were dismissed, the power came back on. This totally felt like another attack from the enemy who didn’t want people to see those powerful testimonies. He first tried to take the projector from us and when that didn’t work he messed with the power. But let me assure you - God is always victorious. The workshop was so powerful, even without electricity.

Despite all of these challenges and attacks we endured through this training, God did an amazing work in the hearts of the youth leaders and the people who attended the anti-human trafficking workshop.

In Jiri, Dolakha, Nepal.

Jiri lies at an altitude of 1,905 metres (6,250 feet) and is the eastern-most terminus of the highway coming from Kathmandu. Bus service is available from Kathmandu but the 184 km ride takes 6 to 8 hours due to narrow, winding roads and so many checkpoints along the high-way. But today it took us 9 hours to get here.

Bishal and I got here around 4pm this evening. We are here for the Youth Ministry Training Level 2 and we will be kicking it off tomorrow morning for the next 3 days. We are anxious to meet the students and hear their stories on how God worked in and through them what they learned in the level 1 training last year. A lot to share ... meanwhile for more picture of the view on the way to Jiri click here.

This Micro Bus took us to Jiri.

Things I enjoy being out of Kathmandu.

1. Cleanliness: I have heard people say "DUSTMANDU" to Kathmandu, and also if you don't wear mask in Kathmandu it is like smoking 3 packets of cigarette everyday. So I enjoy cleanliness being out of Kathmandu city. Not every places out of Kathmandu is clean but in most places at least the air is clean. Also my cough gets better as I have dust allergic cough.

2. People: Both in the training and off the training. You meet interesting people and can learn lots from their stories.

3. Teaching: is because of my passion.

But thing I miss being out of Kathmandu is my Family - Hard to leave 2 girls with Puja (my wife). Alma, my first daughter who is 5 years old always wants to come with me in the training. In fact when I start packing my things she also start packing her stuff:) and I have to explain her over and over that 'you are not coming with me' :(.

Meeting with the local leaders, host of the training.

Appreciate your prayers for our training beginning tomorrow. We are expecting about 20 youth leaders to return for level 2. I think Jiri gets the most rain in Nepal. When we entered Jiri this evening it was raining and it has not stopped yet. The forecast says it will rain for the next 4 days ... wish I had brought some winter clothes but brother Ananda gave a good blankets. Thank you Aananda! We look forward to having a great time with you and your leaders.

Dhanyabaad!

My recent trip to the East Nepal

I like traveling but it is not something I enjoy a lot especially when I have to travel in the night bus. But "the purpose" of my travel makes me excited and keeps me going.

I had a very wonderful ministry trip to the east Nepal from March 29 - April 06, 2013 with Bishal Gurung and several other volunteer trainers (brother Tek, Nirpati and sister Daisyna) who joined us in the training. I am so thankful to God for these fine young leaders who got an amazing passion for the training and for the lost world and also proud their commitment to the ministry. PTL! on this trip alone we trained over 130 youth ministry leaders including several senior pastors in total 3 trainings held in 2 different locations back to back. We are so blessed to be a part these youth leaders' walk with the LORD and also their local church youth ministries.

Jomesh with trainers (from the left) Daisyna Rai, Nirpati Rai - both of them are from Letang, East Nepal and Bishal Gurung. Pastor Tek, another volunteer trainer who also involved in Letang Training had to leave early so missed him here.

When Jesus called Peter second time in John 21:15-19, he asked Peter a same questions 3 times, "Do you love me?" then after Peter's response to him he added his GREAT concern (I believe) " (then) Feed My Sheep." I have heard and preach many sermon from this passage about "are we loving Jesus enough, is Jesus' still your first love?" because that should be our focus otherwise we loose everything else. For it is written in Mark 8:36 "What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?"
But then in the other part of the conversation Jesus is sharing his Great Concern (I believe) to Peter asking him to "Feed My Sheep" because he was leaving soon and was worry about his sheep whether they get fed or not. I think this should be our concern as well so that the sheep God has brought into our (my) circle will be fed enough and fed properly.

I believe being in the teaching ministry we are helping youth leaders first to keep their eyes focused on Jesus then to feed their sheep properly into their youth ministries.

Participants of  Level 1 & 2 trainings in Letang, Morang, East Nepal. It was so encouraging to have several senior pastors in the training.

We have another training coming up end of this month (from April 28-30) in Bharatpur, Chitwan. I am already excited about Chitwan's training and to work with another group of volunteer trainers to serve the youth leaders in Chitwan. Your prayers are highly appreciated for our upcoming trainings!

Jesus is Risen from the Dead! Happy Easter!!

After the Sabbath, at down on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and this other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the LORD cam down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lighting and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you were looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, Just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: 'He has rein from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.' Now I have told you."

Happy Easter!

Second Day of 10 days trip in the East Nepal
We arrived in Itahari yesterday morning around 8am after 16 plus hour of whole night travel in bus. We attended a local Church right after our arrival where I even got a chance to preach. I was personally so blessed by seeing the congregation and their passion to worship Jesus and also knowing this truth that how God is raising hearts to worship him everywhere as we live in this end of the END times.

Training
We are ready to kick off our 3 days training here in Itahari. I am so excited for our trainers Bishal, Nirpati and Daisyna and thankful to their availability. Please pray for our training for the next 3 days here in Itahari then to Legang for another 3 days.

Good Friday!

It's been a long time since I have posted here. Many things happened in past couple of months and they were all for THE GOOD even though some of them were not really friendly.

Well today is a Good Friday here in Nepal. It is a Good Friday because on this Day in the history Jesus died for our sin and  gave us life that is eternal.  Let this day remind to all of us that Jesus died for us as a person not for our work and even for our ministry. Jesus loves you!

Sadly,  I will be missing a Good Friday service at the Church tonight and more than that a Ester Rally on Sunday because I am traveling to east Nepal this afternoon for the next 10 days. We will be doing 3 Youth Ministry Trainings on this trip; ONE in Itahari, Sunsari and TWO in Letang, Morang.

Our bus leaves Kathmandu at 4pm and get Itahari by around 5am tomorrow morning. We will be traveling whole night and hopefully we get there in less than 15 hours. Some of you who have done a bus journey here in Nepal exactly know what I am talking about.

Appreciate your prayers for our team for the next 10 days we train youth leaders for the greater harvest in Nepal!

Blessings!

Jomesh

my trip to the western Nepal ...

The last 10 days in the western Nepal with the team were just amazing. We were able to train altogether 95 youth leaders/ workers in 3 different trainings in 2 locations despite of all the strikes. Again, I was reminded that God is raising up a generation that loves him, his word, loves to worship and sacrifice things in life for his cause and I am so optimistic.

The journey wasn't pleasant though but full of lessons; I missed my flight from Kathmandu to Dhangadi (far-west) because of the crazy traffic in the ring road (airport area). It was so hard and painful to see the plane I was supposed to fly in just take off by the time I reached the airport and they didn’t even refund me :( Then I had to travel 24 hours by bus to reach the destination. And in addition I was stuck in the strike for nearly 4 hours and had to stop the bus over and over because I ate something that evening and my stomach wasn't happy and I didn't get to the training spot on time and  Koshil & Satosh (trainers) had to start the training ...

I was trying to figure out what could be the lessons God wanted to teach me otherwise why would he allow it ? ... I had an impression that the enemy was trying to discourage me and steal my passion for he knew what was coming but then God is God and is big and is the one who gives us unceasing passion. Another lesson that I learned on this trip was to completely trust in the LORD (Pro. 3:5-6) even with the very small detail because I may be too leaning on my well planned-schedule of each day for the whole trip but many things on earth we don't control but God does and he does it for the good.

Pray for these youth leaders as they have departed with one year plan for their youth ministry that God would keep their passion and the zeal same even increase to win the lost. We will be seeing them in between 10-12 months for level 2 (follow up program).

Trainers, from the right; Koshil (GYMN Nepal training staff), Santosh ( a volunteer trainer who has gone through our level 1, 2 and 3 trainings and me, Jomesh). This picture was taken right in Pushpalal Chowk, Nepalgunj after finishing all trainings)

During the Strike we used Rekshaw to get to the training spot.
Appreciate your prayers for my next trip to Bangladesh from August 20-31. Together we make a greater impact for the LORD!

The JOY of serving the LORD

We recently trained 72 youth ministry leaders (including several Church pastors) in Jiri, Nepal. And I was reminded of how Jesus sent 72 to preach the gospel in Luke 10 and this number is so strategic. I am personally so optimistic that these young passionate leaders will have lot of God’s stories to tell and lead many young people to Christ!

Participants of Jiri Training with trainers.
Jiri lies at an altitude of 1,905 meters (6,250 feet) and is the eastern-most terminus of the highway coming from Kathmandu. It took us 8 hours by bus for 184 km due to narrow and winding roads. In some places we (all passengers) had to get down to lighten the vehicle.

HUCFN (Himalayan United Christian Fellowship Nepal) hosted our training and it was so wonderful to hear their work and vision to invest more in youth ministries and how they encouraged several pastors to join the training.  One of the things that really impressed me was how most of the participants had to walk over 4 hours one way just to get in the training location and to see their undivided attention from session 1 to the end.

Micro van that took us to Jiri and there are few places we, all passengers had to get down to lighten the vehicle.

Few testimonies about the training;

Brother Anand Tamang Says,The seminar has helped me to get the real concept of Jesus' model ministry which can be practically applied in my church and youth group. The action steps and setting up of the goals for youth ministry is really applicable. The seminar has helped me to create the mission statement of my youth ministry and the goals set up in class are really helpful for the betterment of the church.”

Joseph Sunuwar Says; “Indeed, I was not clear about youth ministry before even though when I was in Bible College. Now because of this seminar I am vcery much excited to builds up new leaders in my church.”

NUWAKOT Training Experiences, Attacks and Victory - May 2014

It's been a long time since I updated this page :(   This time I would like to share some of the experiences we as a team...
